The work above is part of a bead embellished series of migratory birds and waterfowl. As an artist, I am fascinated by the freedom these birds have to travel thousands of miles every year, across state lines without licenses, countries without passports and lakes without permits. My dream birds carry souvenirs (special beads and charms) as proof of their travels
The beads are worked on found forms. It is important to me that the scale of the birds are as you would expect to find in real life. So, they are large, from 12 inches to 3 feet in size, many worked over decoys. Each bird has a huge variety of glass beads in many shapes and sizes, and vintage beads, semi precious gems, natural objects and sequins as well as gold and silver charms are placed for additional interest.
Techniques include all the popular bead stitches including peyote, brick, square, right-angle weave, herringbone (Ndebele), fringe, roping, bead embroidery and bead mosaic with Apoxy Clay.
